ORC Technology

BEP ENERGY's waste heat generators use a closed-loop Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) to generate electricity from waste heat.

Industrial waste heat is fed to a first heat exchanger (the 'Evaporator') in which a working fluid (organic fluid / refrigerant) is boiled into gas. Expanding this pressurized gas makes the screw expander turn. The expander drives a generator and electricity is produced. After expansion, the low pressure vapor is condensed back into the original working fluid in a second heat exchanger (the 'Condenser'). Ultimately, the working fluid is fed back to the evaporator by a pump.
Expander

  • Robust and proven technology
  • -> admitting wet vapor
  • Low rotational speed

  • -> no gear boxes or electronics needed for high speed turbine operation
  • Lower cost than turbines, higher efficiency than other twin screw rotor profiles
